The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
